Flying with pets in Spain

It is necessary to properly carry out a set of procedures before, during and after the flight when traveling with a pet. Whether it is an assistant dog or any other animal, you will have to take into account the requirements established by both the airline and AENA.

In this section we present the main requirements to fly with pets from the , which will depend on the type of animal and the country of destination. However, we advise you to check with the corresponding airline to find out the exact requirements and conditions when traveling with your pet.

Requirements depending on the type of animal

Dogs, cats and ferrets

Normally, bringing an animal generates an extra cost. Also, you have to know that the possibility of being able to travel with a pet on board is not safe. You have to notify the airline in advance and find out if it is possible or if the airline establishes any limitation in this regard.

Cats, ferrets and dogs have the ability to fly in two ways:

  • In the cabin of the aircraft, in a properly prepared cabin
  • In the cabin with its owner, if it does not exceed the weight and dimensions established by the company. In this case, they must make the journey in a properly conditioned carrier.

Guide or assistant dogs

Guide dogs may fly with the passenger. However, if you fly from another country to Spain, the airline may force you to have the assistance dog fly in the hold.

On the other hand, AENA advises to notify, at least 48 hours in advance, the trip with these dogs. In addition, the guide dog must go to the person’s side and have a muzzle, leash and collar on. This service will not have any added cost.

Other pets or animals

As for the other animals, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food establishes inflexible guidelines on travel requirements. In addition, these conditions change according to the type of trip and according to the destination. In case you need more information on this topic, check with your airline the requirements for the trip.

I return after a visit

If you return to Spain after a trip from outside the European Union, you will need to go through a passenger entry point upon arrival at the aerodrome. In this place, you must declare in the Fiscal Resguardo de la Guardia Civil that you are traveling with a pet. In addition to this, you will have to show your documentation.

On the other hand, depending on the country you return from, you will have to meet certain requirements established in EU Regulation 577/2013. We recommend that you consult your airline or AENA about the specific conditions of your flight, before traveling with pets.
